Drawing in Order to Think

Drawing in Order to Think

Notebooks, ongoing · Method

A working method: never draw to present, only to find out.

The rule is simple — the first fifty drawings of anything are private, ugly and fast. Presentation drawings are only allowed once the thinking has already happened elsewhere.

Fifty before one

Volume beats precision early. The fiftieth sketch knows something the first one could not have guessed.

Reflection

Thinking with a pencil is slower than thinking in words, and considerably more honest.
